Developing a digital scoring system for climbing competitions, in collaboration with Monk Eindhoven.
( 1 min read )
As you probably already know, I'm a climbing fanatic, and I love to participate in a climbing competition called LOCO at Monk Eindhoven. But one thing always stood out to me: competitors log their scores using paper scorecards, which have to be manually processed by staff in order to generate the full ranking. This took many hours, sometimes even days, and mistakes were inevitable.
This made me ask, “Why do we still do it this way?” I couldn't come up with an answer, so I decided to show some initiative. In a few days I built a working demo that digitised the entire scoring process: climbers log their scores on their phones, the system calculates rankings instantly and staff can export the final results with one click.

The demo web app that I built to get Monk Eindhoven excited about the idea.
After some initial testing, I decided to present the demo to Monk and they were excited to have me continue developing it for them.

Although the final version is not in use at the moment due to a higher-level decision within Monk, the experience was extremely valuable. I learned how to gather real user requirements, develop a mobile-first interface and collaborate with a client throughout an uncertain process.
My takeaway: don't accept things for how they are just because it has always been that way. Don't wait for permission to improve something. Be proactive, show initiative, start small, improve and see where it takes you. Create your own opportunities instead of hoping they show up.
